Jeszcze do niedawna kierowca zawodowy kojarzył się z wolnością, przygodą i jazdą w nieznane. Dziś to już raczej symbol zmęczenia, presji czasu i samotności. Choć z zewnątrz może się wydawać, że to całkiem wygodna praca – kabina z klimatyzacją, muzyka z radia i widoki z pierwszego rzędu – rzeczywistość często wygląda znacznie mniej romantycznie.

Zacznijmy od rzeczy najbardziej oczywistej: czas pracy. Kierowcy zawodowi żyją z zegarkiem w ręku – ale nie tym modnym z GPS-em, tylko tym z tachografem, który skrupulatnie odmierza każdą minutę jazdy i odpoczynku. Niby wszystko dla bezpieczeństwa, ale wystarczy jedno opóźnienie na granicy, nieplanowany korek czy awaria, by cały grafik poszedł w diabły. A presja? Gigantyczna. Towar musi dojechać na czas, bo jak nie – to kara, towar się psuje, klient rezygnuje. Kierowca? Jakoś to przeżyje. Może.

Do tego dochodzi ciągła samotność. Tygodnie w trasie, z dala od rodziny, z rozmowami przez telefon jako jedynym kontaktem z bliskimi. Trudno o zdrowe relacje, gdy twoje życie kręci się wokół stacji benzynowych, parkingów i noclegów na tylnym siedzeniu. A o zdrowym jedzeniu czy regularnym ruchu można co najwyżej pomarzyć. Fast foody, energetyki i kawa z automatu – oto dieta współczesnego rycerza szos.

Kolejny problem to biurokracja i przepisy, które zmieniają się szybciej niż ceny paliwa. A te zresztą też przyprawiają o zawrót głowy. Do tego kontrola tu, inspekcja tam, a każda pomyłka to mandaty i punkty karne. Kierowca zawodowy musi być dziś nie tylko świetnym kierowcą, ale też prawnikiem, logistykiem i czasem nawet mechanikiem w jednym.

Nie można też zapomnieć o braku szacunku, z jakim często spotykają się kierowcy – zarówno na drogach, jak i w punktach załadunku czy rozładunku. Dla wielu są po prostu „kierowcami od przewozu”, a nie specjalistami od trudnej, odpowiedzialnej pracy. Zaufania? Niewiele. Zrozumienia? Jeszcze mniej.

Paradoksalnie, mimo tylu problemów, zawód kierowcy zawodowego jest dziś jednym z najbardziej poszukiwanych. Brakuje rąk do pracy, bo młodzi nie chcą żyć w trasie. A starsi? Coraz częściej rezygnują, nie wytrzymując tempa i presji. Branża transportowa balansuje więc na cienkiej linie – i jeśli nie zaczniemy traktować tych ludzi poważnie, ta linia w końcu pęknie.

Czy jest nadzieja? Oczywiście. Automatyzacja, lepsze warunki pracy, zmiany w przepisach – wszystko to może pomóc. Ale najpierw trzeba zrozumieć jedno: kierowca to nie tylko „facet od kierownicy”. To ktoś, kto dba, by półki w sklepie nie świeciły pustkami. To ktoś, kto żyje na drogach, żeby inni mogli żyć wygodnie. Może czas zacząć ich wreszcie doceniać?

Until recently, professional drivers were associated with freedom, adventure and driving into the unknown. Today, they are more likely to be associated with fatigue, time pressure and loneliness. Although from the outside it may seem like a pretty comfortable job – an air-conditioned cab, music on the radio and front-row views – the reality is often much less romantic.

Let's start with the most obvious thing: working hours. Professional drivers live with a watch in their hands – but not a fashionable one with GPS, but one with a tachograph, which meticulously measures every minute of driving and rest. It's all for safety, but one delay at the border, an unplanned traffic jam or a breakdown is enough to ruin the entire schedule. And the pressure? It's enormous. The goods must arrive on time, because if they don't, there will be penalties, the goods will spoil, and the customer will cancel the order. The driver? He'll survive somehow. Maybe.

On top of that, there is constant loneliness. Weeks on the road, away from family, with phone calls as the only contact with loved ones. It's hard to have healthy relationships when your life revolves around petrol stations, car parks and sleeping in the back seat. And healthy eating or regular exercise are nothing more than a dream. Fast food, energy drinks and coffee from a vending machine – this is the diet of the modern knight of the road.

Another problem is bureaucracy and regulations, which change faster than fuel prices. And those are dizzying enough as it is. Add to that checks here, inspections there, and every mistake results in fines and penalty points. Today, a professional driver must not only be an excellent driver, but also a lawyer, logistician and sometimes even a mechanic all rolled into one.

We mustn't forget the lack of respect that drivers often encounter – both on the roads and at loading and unloading points. For many, they are simply ‘transport drivers’ and not specialists in difficult, responsible work. Trust? Not much. Understanding? Even less.

Paradoxically, despite so many problems, the profession of a professional driver is one of the most sought-after today. There is a shortage of workers because young people do not want to live on the road. And the older ones? They are increasingly giving up, unable to cope with the pace and pressure. The transport industry is therefore balancing on a thin line – and if we do not start taking these people seriously, that line will eventually break.

Is there hope? Of course. Automation, better working conditions, changes in regulations – all of these can help. But first, we need to understand one thing: a driver is not just a ‘guy behind the wheel’. They are someone who makes sure that the shelves in the shop are not empty. They are someone who lives on the roads so that others can live comfortably. Maybe it's time to finally start appreciating them?
