MAN Truck & Bus, commonly known as MAN Trucks, is a prominent European commercial vehicle manufacturer with a rich history dating back over a century. Here is an overview of the company's history:

Early Beginnings

  • 1758: The origins of MAN can be traced back to the establishment of the "St. Antony" ironworks in Oberhausen, Germany, which later became the Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) group.
  • 1840: The company SÜDDEUTSCHE Maschinenfabrik is founded in Augsburg, Germany.
  • 1893: The Maschinenfabrik Augsburg and the Maschinenbau-AG Nürnberg merge to form Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG, or M.A.N.

Expansion and Innovation

  • Early 20th Century: MAN begins producing trucks and buses, expanding its product range beyond industrial equipment.
  • 1915: MAN produces its first truck, the MAN Saurer, in collaboration with the Swiss company Saurer.

  • 2006: MAN acquires the Brazilian truck manufacturer Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus, expanding its global footprint.
  • 2011: MAN becomes a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, integrating into the Volkswagen Group's commercial vehicle division.

Recent Developments

  • 2010s-Present: MAN continues to focus on innovation, sustainability, and digitalization. The company has introduced electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as advanced driver assistance systems and connectivity solutions.
  • 2021: MAN Truck & Bus becomes a part of TRATON SE, a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG that also includes Scania and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus.
