How to use OBS Studio to record in-game

You've read the Website Reporting Guidelines & FAQ and now you are wondering how you can record your game play to make website reports. If you haven't already read the Website Reporting Guidelines & FAQ, we recommend that you do so to learn the rules around using our web report system.

In this article, we cover how you can use OBS Studio to record in-game, to collect your report evidence.


OBS Studio

OBS Studio is popular with both streaming services as well as local recording. OBS Studio can be downloaded here.

  1. Once you have OBS open, on the top left of the program head to File > Settings. Settings
     
  2. Go to the Output section and set Output Mode to Advanced. Set your desired settings in the Recording tab. Output  
  3. Go to the Video section and edit to your desired settings. Video
     
  4. Return to the Output section and go to the Replay Buffer tab. Enable Replay Buffer and set the Maximum Replay Time to 120 s which is equal to 2 minutes. Replay Buffer
     
  5. Go to the Hotkeys section and filter by replay. Set a Hotkey for Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer and Save Replay. After you have done this you may close the settings window.

  6. At the bottom of OBS Studio, click the + button under Sources.

  7. Select Game Capture from the list.

  8. Name your Game Capture. In this example we named it TruckersMP. Click OK.

  9. Change Mode to Capture Specific Window and change Window to the game you wish to capture. Click OK.

  10. Before playing, use the Start Replay Buffer hotkey you previously created to start a replay buffer. You can also use the Start Replay Buffer button available in OBS Studio.

  11. In-game, when you want to clip something, use the Save Replay hotkey which you previously created to save the last 2 minutes of game play.
     
  12. Now that you have a clip, head over to YouTube and click Create and then Upload Video. Create and then Upload Video.
     
  13. Wait until your video is done uploading and processing before submitting your report. Once completed, copy the video link and paste it into the report you are submitting. Video link
